Great Continental River Journeys - Rowing Thru Poland EPISODE 6 - Ducal City of Płock
Celebrating Polish Heritage Days 2024 we present the World Premiere of the 6th episode of our epic row through Poland. In this episode we are shown around a monumental, communist building that is now in private hands. We discover why Płock is another royal city.
There are TWO KIDNAPS in this episode! One of them - very tragic.
We, Steve Walker - rowing expert and multiple race winner & Ewa Marcinkowska - rowing enthusiast and a bit competitor, continue our journey down the river Wisła in our Nordic Explorer in our effort to reach Gdańsk in time for the 30th anniversary celebrations of the first free elections in Poland that took place in 1989. Did we make it?

    I hear creaking when you’re applying pressure to the footboard. Do the Edons tend to creak due to the polyethylene? That’s giving me pause when considering purchase.

      I never noticed it until you mentioned it. I never notice it when sculling on the water. It might not be the stretcher at all. It might be the cradles that the boat is sitting on. I agree it would be annoying if that noise were present every stroke when rowing. But it isn't.

      Did I not mention in the video that the increase in top speed of the ferry was from 12kn to 13.5kn? About 10%. The thing is that there are not many boats or ships about, of any sort, where a comparison has been made between BEFORE fitting a bulbous bow and AFTER having had it fitted. So this was a gift of an opportunity to discover the difference. The designer of the EDON boats, Ken Edwards, is an engineer who understands the fluid dynamics. Check out the Edon Marine web site. www.edonmarine.com.au/new-blog-1/2023/11/19/unlock-the-power-of-the-bulbous-bow-transforming-coastal-rowing-sculls

    The designers could have placed the amas a little forward more, in line with bow of the centre hull. How do you think doing this would effect the performance, especially the stuffing of the bows?

    • @StephenWalkerAhoy-Boats
      @StephenWalkerAhoy-Boats 3 месяца назад

      Good question to which I don't have a good answer. The VirusBoats Magnum 21 (which was the first of these open cockpit trimaran day boats ever to be built) also had the amas set back (quite a bit actually). The next boat in the Astus range does NOT have set back amas. So maybe designers copied the original (extremely successful) Magnum 21 without knowing why.

    Great introduction, I am curious how do rowers know where they are going as they are facing where they came from?

    • @StephenWalkerAhoy-Boats
      @StephenWalkerAhoy-Boats 3 месяца назад

      Good question! They look round now and then. But on a straight course designed for rowing they don't need to look round at all. Some wear mirrors. Best place for mirrors is attached to your hat or spectacles. I don't use a mirror myself. But this can happen. ruclips.net/video/9pyA5xPZnvc/видео.htmlsi=W5Os4_wEzXzqyqZm So it's a question of risk assessment.

    Hello, I'm interested in a slide seat rowing boat. I already tried rowing my canoe and enjoyed it but would like to take the next step. I also would like a boat that can handle rough water, like a bay. Here is my problem. Of the few companies I've found that sell a boat like I would like the prices are shocking. Any advice on where I might look? I'm in the USA.

      Have you looked at the Nordic Explorer? ahoy-boats.biz/nordic/explorer/ I just had a customer send me a message saying that the Nordic Explorer was "Perfect - the best bar none". We export them all over the world. As for prices, this is the difference between rowing and canoeing. Canoes do not have to be built to take the stresses that a sculling boat has to take. Canoes are basically just a shell with a seat inside. Rowing and sculling boats are pieces of ultra-lightweight engineering that float.

    • @StephenWalkerAhoy-Boats
      @StephenWalkerAhoy-Boats 3 месяца назад

      Sculling is rowing with an oar in each hand. Rowing is with just one oar that you row with both hands on the handle at the same time. In rowing (sometimes referred to a sweep) you need an even number of people in the boat, otherwise you will go around in circles! I have made a video recently showing how to get back in the boat entitled "Can Steve Walker capsize this TS515 Training Scull?" ruclips.net/video/1xoSgQws0XE/видео.htmlsi=bDj6DknoVZOXp4PC There are Quite a few different videos on the topic of getting back into a single sculling boat.

    Hit Stephen, Quick question: When it comes to rowing shells, does the length of the boat really equal speed? Let's assume there are two identical rowers and one has a slightly longer boat. Which boat would be faster? Thxs

    • @StephenWalkerAhoy-Boats
      @StephenWalkerAhoy-Boats 4 месяца назад

      People think that the longer a boat is the faster it will be. But it is not as simple as that. There is a formula for hull speed. It is pretty accurate. But to put your question into perspective, if one crew was sculling in the optimum shape and size of boat and the other was in a different size or shape it could not be as fast, by definition. Put another way, what shape presents the minimum surface area? A hemisphere. But a hemisphere (half a ball) would spin the fastest but it would not go fast in a straight line. For that it needs to be long and thin. But how long? The longer it gets the greater the surface area would be and thus the greater the skin resistance would be. Your quick question has opened a can of worms.

    Great short video, thank you! I am a "potential" new rower, older guy but fit enough. First, why the shoes off, personal preference or is this standard practice? I would think having shoes on may help with a firmer more stable platform to drive into? Second, I see single sculls with the oar mount in front of the rower like yours and others in the back of the rower. Are there pros and cons to each or is it just personal preference? Also, I am in South Dakota, USA and the lakes/rivers around here are not always calm. can one row in a bit rougher waters?

    • @StephenWalkerAhoy-Boats
      @StephenWalkerAhoy-Boats 4 месяца назад

      Because flexible shoes are already fixed in the boat (since the 1970s). Bow or stern mounted riggers make no difference to the rowing. It's fashion. If you think it will make you go faster, it may. My personal preference is for a stern mounted rigger. The reason? I suspect it might be easier to get back into the boat if I fall in. Disclaimer: I've never tried getting back into a boat with a bow mounted rigger because I've never fallen in from one. You can row in rougher water if you have sufficient skill. To make it easier better use a coastal boat designed for that sort of water. Alternatively you could choose to go out sculling at dawn when it is invariably calmer. I could give further advice but common sense is key.

    I left home and was in England at the age of 16, at Chatham Dockyard (1965) and did some rowing in the three naval basins just for fun. When I went up to the University of Newcastle upon Tyne , I rowed a lot at the Town Moor, a small lake, and the Leases Park, where the park attendant was kind enough to let me row at much less than half the price, with no time limits, as I was attracting a few customers with my antics, I loved the ducks keeping pace with me, as shown in this video at 7:27. I rowed at Durham and also at Cambridge, when I went down for some discussions in my engineering research field. The Cambridge students took me punting, and, as I never did it before, they invited me to do it on my own to see how it goes. They rode their own punts and I mine. I felt for the rocking sensitivity of the punt as the pitching was solid enough, and so down the river we went, with the current Standing on the punt did not worry me at all. The other students were surprised at my pace, and I was leading, going fast under the bridges, some of which were rather narrow. When we got to our destination the other "local" students insisted that I had played a joke on them them, saying that I never punted before. Well, it was true enough, I had never punted before! What I did not tell them was that I came from a family of boat builders in Malta, and I had spent my youth with my brothers and friends rowing around the coast of Malta, where we did things that no father nor mother would like to hear! I returned to Malta in 1969 ( Yes I am a very old man) and being an engineer I made a few modification to the oars on my boat, I never liked the blade to change its angle during the stroke, so I structured a system where the blade always keeps at 90 degrees with the length of the boat, In normal sculling the blades lose a lot, as they are about 45 degrees at the start and end of the stoke, With engineering one can try a few experiments,. With two linked rowers it is easy to achieve blades retaining the 90 degree angle during the rowing stroke. With sculling I never liked the pitching effect, with the boat nosing in and out, so I also tried going "fishy:, and rather than using oars, I tried oscillating a "foil" under the centre of gravity of the boat, or two foils in opposite directions so they would react on one another and would not " oscillate the boat". I believe that oscillating "foils or flukes" as in dolphins and killer whales, one can reach a higher speed and it is more convenient to use " submerged flukes" in choppy seas as we have in Malta, Using constantly submerged oscillating flukes, the movement is more silent and smoother than the sculling and my wife prefers ir. Returning to my antics at Newcastle, at about 1962, I had designed and made a ten channel digital transmitter and receiver, which I introduced in a model submarine made out of three tin oil cans, as oils for cars used to come in tin cans in those days, not plastic containers. With this tin can submarine controlled by my secret ten channel digital radio, I used to chase the ducks which flitted away, as the duck shown in this video at 7:27. (left side) . Now I feel old, but every time I receive some correspondence from Stephen Walker, It brings back memories, and my Grandson who is now old enough will join in the family tradition! I would not mind having a single of double " Gig" as made by Stephen Walker, they are perfect for our waters in Malta. My spirit is willing and my bones seem to be lasting too. Congratulations on this Nice video, but crossing the weir is not as thrilling as some of the antics we got up to when young, which my father never knew, but my mother told me that she knew, as she had friends who lived by the coast, and she was well informed! Mothers always knew their children's secrets, but they also knew how their children would handle them.! Thank you for the memories.

    The more you weigh the easier it is to capsize the boat. I have praticed this a lot. First put the oars behind the boat so the oars dont swing out and hit you. Then stand on the rigger and turn the boat over. Now getting back on. Run your hand toward the other side of the rigger and straddle your body across the rigger then turn your body over the seat and get back on the seat. This is the fastest way to get back on the ts515. Love love love the ts515. I have been wanting to get a rowing boat since the late 70s. I have thought for years which boat should I get. Last year I finally pulled the trigger and got this. Never a day goes by where I thought did I make the wrong choice. Everything about it is perfect. Most rowing boats have a little fin where the whole body of the ts515 is a fin. This boat tracks surprisingly well for its length.
